报告简介:The Center for Composite & Smart Structures is a research group inside the Department of Aeronautics, Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), which have been working with composite materials since 1983, and with embedded sensors, particularly with fiber optic sensors (FOS) since 1996. During this period up to now, they have participated at more than 15 large European projects, like PERFECT (development of techniques for monitoring the processes for composite manufacturing), SARISTU (Smart Intelligent Aircraft Structures) or CRYOFOS (Development of strain, temperature and hydrogen leakages sensors applicable to space launchers). After a quick survey illustrating how technology has evolved during this 20 years, from multi-point sensors to distributed sensing, the focus of the talk will deal on the still unsolved issue related to SHM with FOS, algorithms for damage detection from strain measurements. A crack into a structure may drop significantly the failure load, but before the catastrophic failure, the crack may have associated large strains at the crack tip, but these strains vanished a few centimeters away from the crack, and the overall strain field experiences only slight changes. By using pattern recognition techniques, some information about damage can be obtained. Results on realistic structures, like the body of a UAV, and a wind turbine blade will be presented, showing the capabilities and limitations.

报告人简介:Prof. Guemes received his Ph.D. from the Polytechnic University of Madrid in 1983 and now holds the Professor position at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM). Currently he is the Director of the Aerospace Materials and Processes Department at UPM, the Chair of the Spanish Association of Composite Materials (AEMAC) and member of the European Association Council (EACM). He has been Vice Chair of the IWSHM Congress, held at Stanford University since 1987.

Prof. Guemes’s research interests include composite materials, structural health monitoring, fiber optic sensors, intelligent materials and smart aircraft structures. He is the author of 3 books and over 100 publications and lectures at conferences. In addition, he is in close liaison and involvement in R & D projects with companies such as Airbus, Gamesa, Indra, and other European industries. In September 2011, Prof. Guemes was awarded Lifetime Achievement Award 2011 by the Boeing Company at the 8th IWSHM in recognition of his contributions to the development of structural monitoring techniques.
